Author Mike Gordon will read from the final installment of his Montana-based, fly-fishing murder mystery trilogy, You’re Next, on Tuesday, September 16 at Elk River Books, 120 N. Main St. in Livingston, at 7 p.m.
Gordon’s mysteries incorporate international intrigue sprinkled liberally with corpses both created and discovered in disconcerting manners on the region’s various fishing streams. In You’re Next, his hero “Macduff Brooks starts his guiding season on June 21st, the summer solstice, with a client floating on the Madison River near Ennis. Another boat drifts toward them with what appears to be only one person. But on closer inspection that person is encased in a wicker man basket-like covering, with only the person’s head exposed. The person is wearing a wreath of mistletoe. As the boat drifts closer Macduff recognizes the person as Paula Pajioli, the CIA agent for Montana. On the front of the wicker are plastic explosives and a sign that reads ‘You’re Next, Lucinda,’ a reference to Macduff’s lady friend and now fiancée. A timer counts down to zero and the boat explodes, killing Pajioli and sending Macduff to the hospital, blinded.”
In typical Gordon fashion, this is merely the beginning of a fast-paced thriller with a distinctly Montana flavor. His first two Montana mysteries, Deadly Drifts and Crosses to Bear, have been praised for their descriptive details and river lore, as well as for Macduff’s endearing charisma.
Gordon’s reading will take place at 7 p.m. upstairs at Elk River Books, and will be followed by a reception and book signing. The event is free and open to the public. For more information call 333-2330.
