Our good friend Craig Johnson returns with his latest Sheriff Walt Longmire novel, Tooth and Claw, for a noon reading. Rain-mosas, anyone?

The novella, a break from the usual Longmire setting of today’s northeastern Wyoming, finds Walt Longmire and his partner Henry Standing Bear—both recently returned from Vietnam—in the Alaskan tundra facing down a ferocious polar bear. However, they soon realize that the real danger at the remote oil rig, where Longmire has a security job, is lurking among his co-workers who are after a priceless treasure and will stop at nothing to get it.

Johnson is the New York Times bestselling author of the Walt Longmire mystery novels, which are the basis for Longmire, the hit Netflix original drama. The books have won multiple awards, including Le Prix du Polar Nouvel Observateur / Bibliobs, the Wyoming Historical Association’s Book of the Year, Le Prix 813, two Western Writers of America Spur Awards, the Mountains & Plains Book of the Year, the SNCF Prix de Polar, Publishers Weekly Best Book of the Year, the Watson Award, Library Journal’s Best Mystery of the Year, the Rocky, and the Will Rogers Award for Fiction. His novella, Spirit of Steamboat, was selected by the Wyoming State Library as the inaugural One Book Wyoming. Johnson lives in Ucross, Wyoming, population 26.

“Like the greatest crime novelists, Johnson is a student of human nature,” notes the Los Angeles Times. Walt Longmire is strong but fallible, a man whose devil-may-care stoicism masks a heightened sensitivity to the horrors he’s witnessed.”

Elk River Books is located at 122 S. 2nd St. in downtown Livingston. The event begins at noon, and a book signing and reception will follow. For those who can’t attend in person, the event will live-stream at YouTube.com/ElkRiverBooks.
