The Immortal Irishman is a biography of Thomas Francis Meagher, an Irish revolutionary who became a hero in America, chronicling his life from leading an uprising against the British to escaping exile, becoming a Union general in the Civil War, and his mysterious death as governor of Montana. The book uses Meagher’s life to tell the larger story of Irish-American history, highlighting his leadership in the Irish Brigade and his quixotic final years in the American West, while also resolving the mystery of his disappearance.
Timothy Egan is the author of 10 books. His most recent, A Fever in the Heartland, is a historical thriller that was an immediate New York Times bestseller. His account of the Dust Bowl, The Worst Hard Time, won the 2006 National Book Award. A lifelong journalist, Egan worked as a national correspondent and opinion columnist for The New York Times, roaming the West. As a Times correspondent, he shared a Pulitzer Prize in 2001 with a team of reporters for their series, “How Race is Lived in America.”
