Elk River Books Celebrates Bloomsday

Jun 14, 2011 | Events

Elk River Books, 115 E. Callender, downtown Livingston, will mark Bloomsday, the internationally celebrated holiday that pays tribute to the groundbreaking novel Ulysses by James Joyce, on Thursday, June 16, at 7:00 pm.

Bloomsday began in 1954 on the 50th anniversary of the single day the events of the novel take place, and now is celebrated worldwide with readings, performances, pub crawls and reenactment’s of the scenes of the book.  The largest celebration takes place in Dublin, where the novel is set.

Elk River’s event is co-sponsored with Conley’s Books and Music, 106 S. Main Street.  Copies of Ulysses are available at both bookstores.

During the celebration, participants are encouraged to read favorite excerpts from the novel, or perform Irish music or songs inspired by the novel. Or they are welcome to just sit back and enjoy.

Featured readings will be by poet/playwright Marc Beaudin, the Blue Slipper Theatre’s Scott Black, Colter Langan of Actor’s Theatre of Montana and KBZN-KKQX “The Eagle” radio, and actress Alexis Weinkoff.  Featured music will be performed by Mike Cloud Devine; musician, author and host of the perennially popular Mainstreet Show.  Devine will also perform excerpts from his Joyce-inspired one-man play Riverrun.
