Wilsall photographer Joanne Berghold and Bozeman historian/radio personality Derek Strahn will sign copies of their new books during the 2014 Holiday Stroll on Friday, December 5, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
Berghold has spent 25 years wandering the breadth of Montana, and the last several years compiling her work into a series of four-season landscapes. The result is 102 black and white photos in her new book, Without Compass. Jim Harrison praises the photos in Without Compass saying, “many of them I want to live within, just like I do good paintings.” Author Rick Bass provides an introduction for the book, which is Berghold’s third in a series of Montana-based photographic works, including Montana Hometown Rodeo and Old Windows, Old Doors.
Historian and high school teacher Strahn has produced an illustrated book based on his popular radio show, The Montana Medicine Show, which is produced and airs on KGLT. “The book highlights little-known hucksters, risk-takers, reformers, and reprobates along with famous politicians, artists, Native Americans, and sports heroes. Numerous women are featured, including ground-breaking professionals, Hollywood stars, and fearless human-rights activists. Natural events such as floods, fires, earthquakes, and blizzards take their turns, too.”
The Wheatgrass Saloon will feature Bolivian crafts for sale during the Holiday Stroll, proceeds of which benefit the Global Midwife Education Foundation. GMEF is a nonprofit dedicated to reducing maternal and infant mortality in rural areas of the developing world. More information is available at midwifeeducation.org.
